The following comes from Sex God: Exploring the Endless Connections Between Sexuality and Spirituality by Rob Bell
“You can’t be connected with God until you’re at peace with who you are. If you’re still upset that God gave you this body or this life or this family or these circumstances, you will never be able to connect with God in a healthy, thriving, sustainable sort of way. You’ll be at odds with your maker.” – pg 46
How to Connect With God
Thinking Negatively About My Life
When I read the above quote I really stopped and thought about all the times I’ve said any of the following:- I’m no good
- I’m a failure
- I’m overweight
- I wish my life was like _________
- Why does my child have to be like that?
- and many others
Thinking Negatively About God
However I never once thought that by thinking those things, by dwelling on them, I was essentially saying to God:- You made me wrong
- You failed when you created me
- You don’t know what’s best for me
- I’m not happy with you
Connecting with God
How can I be connected with God if I’m not at peace about me and my life?Read that quote again.
“You can’t be connected with God until you’re at peace with who you are. If you’re still upset that God gave you this body or this life or this family or these circumstances, you will never be able to connect with God in a healthy, thriving, sustainable sort of way. You’ll be at odds with your maker.” – pg 46
What the Bible Says
The bible talks about our connection with God too:So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27
God made us right. He made no mistake when he made us, not one. For he made us in his image.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
He has a plan for us so while we have free will, a lot of what happens in our life was planned that way, even the bad things. God didn’t make a mistake with your life.
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8 NIV
If you connect with God he will connect with you too. Connecting with God doesn’t mean just sitting there and hoping it happens. You do what you can to get near to God and you should start with loving yourself and your life.
Many times when I was frustrated with myself or my life, I didn't realize that I was complaining about God. Thank you for pointing that out. You made some good points here. Thank you.
